    Hello,

Are there any pans to release the functionality of Annotum as a plugin? This would give users far greater flexibility in using existing themes. What are your thoughts ?

    Thanks

    • Solvitor

We considered the plugin approach, but for the first version we wanted to provide a very stable and consistent experience. We believe that creating turnkey, peer-reviewed scholarly journals with a structured editor is best done via a single theme. As I recently wrote:

Annotum is provided as a single WordPress theme, including its own plugins, templates, and custom code. Although some [similar] features are already available as stand-alone plugins, a key design philosophy of Annotum was to keep the installation as simple as possible. WordPress plugins and themes can at times conflict; the Annotum team sought to reduce the chance of such conflicts by having a single theme contain all of the features to be delivered.

Some of the new functionality (e.g., workflow, pdf export) is implemented as plugins within the theme; others (for example the article editor) are much more deeply integrated. But certainly you can feel free to download the source code and have a go at creating a separate plugin for any of the features you would like to use.

One last note: because we based Annotum on the Carrington theme engine, it’s a reasonably straightforward matter to create child themes that use the base Annotum features with a completely different look and feel. Annotum 1.0 comes with one base and one child theme.

    Hi.

I am very much a wordpress novice but I do have some experience with building child themes with wordpress and buddypress. However I cant seem to find an up to date resource on how to do this for Carrington.

A particular issue I am struggling with is incorporating the article custom post type and getting it to successfully display using a child theme

Would it be possible for you or crowd favorite to post up a tutorial for building child themes within the Carrington framework for Annotum. I can see this is a different task to building child themes in the normal fashion.

If crowd favourite do this then I think it would also encourage wider use of their framework.

P.s this is great work your doing. I very much hope to use this tool within a multisite network.

      Thanks for your comment.

Would it be possible for you or crowd favorite to post up a tutorial for building child themes within the Carrington framework for Annotum?

You may have already seen what the WordPress Codex has to say about child themes, and I can refer you to this post on the Carrington Theme blog which has some additional details — check the comments section below the main post. Finally, instead of starting a new child theme from scratch, with Annotum you might try copying the entire Currents child theme to a new directory and modifying it.

P.s this is great work your doing. I very much hope to use this tool within a multisite network

Thanks! We’ve done some testing with multisite and it seems to work fine, but if you do see any issues, please feel free to send any bug or issue reports to the discussion list.

    Hi,

Thank you for this nice theme (I hope this website is alive).
I love it and I’d like to keep it for my blog but I have an error message at the top of page with the following information:

    Thank you

      Thanks for your kind words!

Please use the support page to see how to submit support issues (and please don’t submit the same question multiple ways). I’ve responded to the ticket you submitted via UserVoice.

  5. Hi, first of all, my compliments for the project.

I just want to know if there’s an Italian stable translation for this plugin, it looks interesting (we currently manage over 7 wordpress news sites).

Waiting for answer, thank you ! Regards from Italy

  6. Carlos

I very much hope to use this tool within a multisite network. Keep going, U doing GOOD

    Hello,

    Good theme bad support, seemingly!

    • annotum

You can create an Annotum site for free at http://wordpress.com (simply select the Annotum Base or Annotum Sans theme). Then you can author whatever you wish.

Is it just me, or are there major complications using the editor? I have tried to test the system (I am a professional publisher in search of a system for an experimental project), and I cannot get the XML article editing interface to behave in any reasonable manner. In other XML editors, one can toggle to the code (for example) to insert new elements precisely, etc., but here, I cannot get rid of elements that are already in place (again, for example). If this worked along the lines described, this would be a perfect solution for me. WordPress + XML is an excellent idea, but only if the use is simple and intuitive, right?

Thanks for your thoughts on this,

    Fred

    • annotum

It is not just you. Remember that Annotum is a 1.0 version, so some features particularly the XML support can be a bit rough. There have been some improvements in later versions of the code (see https://github.com/Annotum/Annotum/downloads for the latest tested version). Also, we’re currently considering a significant rewrite of the XML editor which should make the experience much better.

In the meantime, you can edit the XML directly by using Google Chrome as your browser and using the “inspect element” feature to view and manipulate the XML code in the editor.

I was having an account on Knol where I posted some very nice articles for others as well as my own reference. Is it possible to get an access to those articles with previous Knol urls ?? Please guide.

    • annotum

You still have time to set up redirects by following the automated transfer process. The other option is to download your knols to a file and manually post the content elsewhere (including an Annotum site if you so choose).

However, these options are only available until October 1, 2012 – after that date you can no longer transport or export Knols (although the redirects should continue to function until search engines are able to find the new location(s) of your content).

Please visit http://annotum.uservoice.com if you have any questions.

      • Jay Rock

Thanks annotum , i was wondering wheter those articles can be retrieved back or no..I taught those were lost. Thanks again.

Hi, I am novice for the web development and wordpress. I just got my 1st assignment to develop a website for an ayurveda journal through it. Annotum seems great, will explore it.

    • || ayurbhishak ||

      Dear cssbubble,
I am an Ayurvedic Physician and an academician. I am using wordpress quite some time now. I am searching a site or blog which could provide an opportunity to build journal (open source). I came across Annotum Base Theme which can be useful for my purpose. As you are developing website for an ayurveda journal i thought you could help me.
      Regards
      Dr.Kiran

  11. Crane

This is my first time to annotun, I will always support you, whether knol or annotun! I learned how to get started.

  12. ultrabook reviews

Hi, is there a Chinese edition for Chinese users, many Chinese english is not good enough to use Annotum

    • annotum

Sorry, not sure what you’re asking. For questions about the acceptable use policy of a site or service (for example http://wordpress.com) you’d need to contact the operator of that service.

  13. informationdigger

Hi. really like the theme. I am by no means a programmer, and know just enough to get myself into trouble lol. I am using the theme for my medical librarian blog, and have a question for you concerning “category’s”. There are “article category’s” that I am able to add to my posts, but there doesnt’ seem to be a widget so that I can get these category’s to show up on my home page, leaving the category of little value… do you know how I could get these to work and show up on my main page?

    • annotum

There is not currently a widget on the Annotum theme on WordPress.com for this. However, on a self-hosted WordPress (.org) site, you can add any widget that supports custom post types and taxonomies, and you should be able to find one that allows you to do what you wish.

  14. flirtenartikel

Hey, I am a wordpress plugin developer and I find Annotum really fascinating. It’s simply a great theme and I’m looking forward digging in the code and see what you’ve cool accomplished. Thanks a lot. I like it already :)

  15. albertoaune

This is my second post in this space. I’m working on my knols migrated to Annotum. I hope there will be a community of authors to meet and help each other. Thanks Annotum, for answering posts by authors. Knol did not answer our questions and problems. This discouraged the authors. Alberto Auné

Iam big fan of Annotum. Nice theme. Cant wait to see the code.

  17. Sam

    Hi everybody,

Does somebody know if there will a new release of annotum and for which date?
We are nearly at wordpress v2.5 now, what about annotum?

    Thanks

    • annotum

The latest version of the code (for self-hosted WordPress sites) is here: https://github.com/Annotum/Annotum/downloads

We are working on an improved article editor but that is some months away. There will be an interim release with some useful fixes in the coming weeks.

  18. Franck

    Hello,

If there was no some issues, Annotum could be very nice and efficient theme.
Hope that a soon update will fix those problems to improve annotum.
Is there any upgrade in perspective?

  19. Franck

Thank you very much for your answer.
I have already downloaded that version, but I found some issues, in particular for PDF creating/opening, and the citation format that seems a little bit “fancy or unprofessional” for a peer-reviewer article citation.
But, since you say that you are working on an interim release, I hope that these issues will be covered and fixed.

Thanks again for this nice theme.

Many wordpress themes can’t be set to close the comment function in admin zone.this is a useful function . can you recently develop it? and I’m looking forward to. . . if you have developed it ,then please email me , ok ?

    • annotum

Annotum allows site admins to permit or block comments by default on articles, posts, and/or pages via the “Allow people to post comments on new articles” checkbox (Dashboard > Settings > Discussion). You can also set this on a per-item basis in the article/page/post editor via the “Allow comments” checkbox in the “Discussion” metabox.

    Hi,

I’m trying to install annotum1.1, but I have the following issue:

( ! ) Fatal error: Call to undefined function cfct_posts() in C:\wamp\www\annotum\index.php on line 16
    Call Stack
    # Time Memory Function Location
    1 0.0461 140632 {main}( ) ..\index.php:0

Could you please tell what is the problem with this error?
I don’t have this problem when installing other CMS.

    Thank you for your feedback.

Please use http://annotum.uservoice.com to submit support questions. As to your error, I have not seen that one in testing. I suggest taking a complete backup of your existing site (all code and databases), then reinstalling both WordPress and Annotum from scratch and see if you still get the error. Please feel free to follow up on the support site should you have any additional questions.

      • christo

thank you for your answer. I will try to install from scratch.
        Thanks.

I just can’t get my head around how to change the dull and plainish look of the template to something more professional looking (i.e. more graphical in its look). I read the comment in relation to the carrington theme and child themes and the link posted in this regard in how to go about doing this but failed to get it working. This is based on the carrington theme http://www.ees.cl/ I would love to have something like this in terms of look and graphics for the annotum website. Is this possible to achieve? If so how and any chance of a tutorial or a patch of some type.

    Thanks

    • annotum

Please use http://annotum.uservoice.com to submit support questions.

Personally, I think of the Annotum Base and Annotum Sans themes as “clean and elegant” rather than “dull and plainish” or not “professional”, but I may possibly be biased. :) . However, it’s certainly possible to completely change the look of this or any theme that supports child themes. You may find specific information for developing your own Carrington customizations here: http://carringtontheme.com/category/development/

Also, if you want a really great design or even some functional customization, you should contact Crowd Favorite who built Carrington and did all the heavy lifting for Annotum.

  23. Rakim

Thanks for the reply. I meant no insult or disrespect to your hard work. Would Crowd favorite charge for the services or would they help in quiding one to do the work?

I was not able to get the Annotum Sans Theme working? What are we to do with this folder for the child theme? I just replaced the files with it. It messed the whole website casued it not to work.

    • annotum

No disrespect taken – everyone has their own opinion!! :) :)

Crowd Favorite would charge for a custom theme. If you have Annotum Base installed and working, you can add Annotum Sans via the normal WordPress upload/add theme functionality using the Annotum Sans zip file available on the download page:

      https://github.com/Annotum/Annotum/wiki/Downloads

      Hope this helps,

      -C

  24. Rakim

Thanks for the tip. I will try it.
Just following on from this…which are the files or should I say where are the files located within the sturcture if I was to look via ftp the files that actually need changing for re-designing and re-styling things (of course there would be the css files – any other files)?

    Thanks

    • annotum

PLEASE submit support questions to http://annotum.uservoice.com

Child themes install like any other theme: Dashboard > Appearance > Themes > Add new. No FTP is needed. If you examine the download zip for Annotum Sans you will see some example files to modify.

    Hi,

    This looks a quite nice!
However, the citation format doesn’t seems as professional as the objectives intended by Annotum!
High-lightening the last modification date and/or the edition version would be useful for internal purposes, but for readers, I don’t think that this piece of information will present something useful!
Usually, readers are interested to see the final version, but not how many modifications were brought to the article, or what edited version they are reading!

So, if I may why the current citation format includes the modification status and the edited version number?

    Thanks

    Cheers!

    Seb

    • annotum

The feature that displays major revisions was requested by an Annotum contributor. In that case, the major (reviewed) revisions are tracked in an online repository so they wanted to explictly identify those major versions. If you do not want to do that, you can always edit the article in its published state.

    Great post,
I have carefully read your artical description & I am interested to take your artical. I read the comment in relation to the carrington theme and child themes and the link posted in this regard in how to go about doing this but failed to get it working. This is based on the carrington theme.thank you for your niche post

Its great that knol users can also cash-in on this, great. I intend to take advantage of this. I have a question, can annotum be used with traditional blogging platforms like blogger.com?

    • annotum

As a WordPress theme, Annotum has to run on WordPress. You can of course link to a Blogger site if desired.

  29. Diptimayee

First of all…. congratulation to all the Annotum team members to create such a beautiful website. I had one account on Knol & articles were published there. I just read your previous comment regarding transferring contents from Knol to here was 01st October 2012. Is there any option now to shift my articles from Knol to here ?

    Thanks,
    Diptimayee

Loved the concept of Knol – A unit of knowledge. Wish all the best to annotum, and hope to see some excellent contributions by the community !!

  31. LiveSpeech

I was looking for Knol and I stumbled over Annotum. Learnt Knol was discontinued last year and replaced with Annotum. Looks very interesting. Checking around to see what more in stock.

  32. Rujacksalad

Knol was discontinued, what happened with it? so I visit this page for more informations.

Is there a way to add a slider to the Annotum Base when using on WordPress.com? I want to add an image/text slider on my portfolio with elements linked to each of the pages to show off my capabilities a little more interactively. Here is the site in case you would like to see it: http://dfliesen.wordpress.com/

    • annotum

I’m not sure what you mean by a “slider” but certainly you can add any text or graphics supported in WordPress via HTML, but only if you point your front page to a specific page or post. On a self-hosted WordPress site you could also modify the theme or add a plugin to get this functionality, but you’re limited to the stock options on WordPress.com.

  34. Nari

I was talking about an image slider in which you have images that swap out automatically to promote different aspects of your site for people to click on. I hate that I’m stuck with either a static page or posts with no other options for interactive display on the homepage. These are some examples (but I think these are for WordPresss.org instead of the free WordPress.com hosted solutions):
    http://wordpressmind.com/7-best-free-responsive-image-sliders-wordpress-plugin/

I guess that I’ll just have to learn how to code it myself to proved a hyperlinked images slider within my existing site.

    • annotum

You can use the ‘carousel’ feature of Annotum to approximate this behavior. See http://annotumdemo.wordpress.com/ for an example.

TO set this up you need to create some articles (not posts or pages, but you can link to posts/pages from these articles), an add an image to each one. Set the image as a ‘featured image’ and check the box to ‘include in home page carousel’ in the article editor. Any further questions – http://annotum.uservoice.com

  35. Dmitry Brant

You should be aware that the “serbo-croatian translation” is a thinly-veiled scam to get you to put a link to their site (WebHostingGeeks), which will improve their Google PageRank. The translation itself is only marginally better than Google Translate.
